Self-Care Isn’t Selfish
Too often, we place everyone and everything else above ourselves—our jobs, our families, our commitments—until we have little left to give. But prioritizing yourself isn’t selfish; it’s an essential act of self-care. You can’t pour from an empty cup, and when you don’t take care of yourself, you aren’t truly present for others either.
Acknowledge what you need daily, and don’t wait for anyone else to provide it for you. Whether it’s time to rest, exercise, meditate, or enjoy a simple pleasure, give yourself permission to take what you need. Some things will be easy to incorporate into your daily routine, while others might require planning—and that’s okay. The key is to recognize your needs and take action.
Listen to your body. Pay attention to what it’s telling you, and respond accordingly. When you’re tired, rest. When you need clarity, take a walk or step away from your usual environment. Don’t ignore the signals your body is sending or push them aside for another day. The longer you neglect yourself, the harder it becomes to function at your best.
For example, today I worked remotely for half a day and then spent time at the Grove Park Inn and Spa. I had lunch by a window overlooking the mountains and later sat in front of the fireplace checking emails. It was just what I needed—a perfect balance of productivity and restoration. I listened to my body and gave it what it asked for.
What do you need today? Do you need a break? A mental health day? Even if all you do is rest, that’s enough. Some of the best gifts we can give ourselves are the ones that allow us to recharge.
Take small steps toward self-care daily. It can be as simple as drinking enough water, setting boundaries with your time, or spending a few moments in gratitude. Self-care doesn’t have to be extravagant; it just needs to be intentional.
Prioritizing your needs first isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity. Make a plan and follow through. Give yourself grace, and take care of yourself. You deserve it. When you make yourself a priority, you show up in the world as a stronger, healthier, and more fulfilled version of yourself.
